Marcus Garvey spent some time in Robbins, inspired by this black town, ran by all black elected officials. It is said that Garvey became one of Hoover's first targets. You can still find elders in Robbins who remember how his presence invigorated the community and how gatherings were canceled because of Hoover's spies.
